Before we dive into the details, let’s understand what we mean by final grade. In Moodle, a popular learning management system, you can create various assessments for your courses. These assessments can include quizzes, tests, assignments, and more. However, simply summing up the scores of these assessments doesn’t always give an accurate representation of a student’s performance. That’s where the final grade calculation comes in.
Setting Up Your Moodle Final Grade Calculation
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to set up your Moodle final grade calculation:
- Access Edit Mode: Go to your Moodle course and navigate to the “Course total” section. Click on the three dots next to it and select “Edit calculation.”
- Add ID Numbers: If you haven’t already, add ID numbers to your assessments (e.g., T1, T2, T3, FT, CW). These ID numbers will help us create the formula.
- Write the Formula: Start the formula with an equal sign (just like in Excel). Use square brackets to enclose the ID numbers (e.g., [T1], [T2], [T3], [FT], [CW]). Multiply each assessment score by its weight (e.g., 1.5 for 15%, 2.5 for 25%, etc.). Add up all the weighted scores.
- Adjust the Scale: By default, Moodle shows scores on a scale of 0 to 100. If you prefer a different scale (e.g., 1 to 10), divide the final score by an appropriate factor (e.g., 10).
